Compilation of Chained Indices (2008)

Abstract

Unlike the usual indices that use base year, chained index is a method that enables analyst to compare current value to most recent past and hence form a continuous series. In this sense, one can measure real growth through a very close estimate. In this project, this concept and methodology were applied to selected statistical data generated in the Philippine Statistical System. In particular the study was able to compute for chained indices of consumer price index, foreign trade index, gross value added/gross domestic product/personal consumption expenditure index and producers price index of agricultural commodities. It also identified problems and recommended solutions on the application of this approach, and compared and contrasted chained indices vis-à-vis existing indices of different statistical agencies.
