Survey of Statistical Services of the Government (1993)

Abstract

A survey was conducted in 1990 among 582 respondents comprised of government agencies, offices and units in all regions of the country. Findings revealed the 21% of the 3,521 total statistical personnel in government had Statistics as their discipline of education, and 79% of statistical positions were occupied by non-statisticians. This clearly revealed the lack of professional statisticians in the Philippine Statistical System (PSS). The survey determined the extent and nature of availability of vital statistical data vis-a-vis data requirements, provided the basis for data quality assessment for the improvement of sectoral statistics, determined the manpower and resources capabilities of government/private units in statistical data production, determined statistical technologies and methodologies used in data production/ dissemination/ utilization, and determined technical/ financial/ research/ training and other types of support needed by units in the system. Information helped in assessing the current strengths and weaknesses of the PSS.
