Abstract
This research project was implemented to: (a) assess the need for the application of statistical concepts and methods in the various subjects in elementary schools’ curricula; (b) develop a framework for the introduction of statistical concepts and methods as tools for effective learning in the elementary grades; and (c) construct instructional materials for use as teaching aids in enhancing elementary education. In assessing the need for the application of statistical concepts and methods, two curricula are studied. The first is the DECS curriculum currently being enforced in all public elementary schools through the
Department’s minimum learning competencies. The second is the curriculum being followed by the UP Integrated School, a laboratory school which already integrates some statistical concepts in the teaching of elementary school subjects. This project produced two outputs namely: 1) A Primer on Statistics, and 2) Exercises Using Statistics in Teaching Elementary Subjects. These materials are intended for elementary school teachers. It contains illustration on how suggested statistical concepts and methods can be used in enhancing the teaching of elementary subjects in the Philippines. For each concept or method, general examples were given. Then each general example is followed by specific illustrations for different subjects. The following statistical concepts and methods are suggested for use in the elementary level: population and sample, parameter and statistic, simple random sampling, measurement, experimentation and randomization, tables and graphs, stem and leaf display, and measures of central tendency.
