Development of an Integrated System for Monitoring the Situation of Children and Women (1989)

Abstract

The SRTC component of the project evaluated and explored the socio-economic indicators for monitoring the situation of children and women using data from the Integrated Survey of Households and Civil Registration records of the National Statistics Office. Three technical reports were produced:
(a) A Socio-Economic Profile of Families with Children in ABCSD Provinces in the Philippines (by Valerio, T., W.Tan and J. Ocaya). The study utilized data from the Labor Force Survey and the Family Income and Expenditures Survey to present the socio-economic profile of families with children in the Area Based Child Survival and Development (ABCSD) provinces; namely, Ifugao, Negros Occidental, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi. Indicators such as income and expenditure levels and patterns, labor force and employment characteristics, social and demographic profiles revealed that these areas were in a disadvantaged situation in 1985 as compared to other provinces in the Philippines.
(b) Factors of Infant Mortality Based on Vital Registration Records (by Tan, W., T. Va.erio and J. Ocaya). This study was the first attempt to match the birth and death registration records of infants to determine some socio-demographic indicators related to infant mortality. Several important variables extracted from the 1983 data were birth weight, sex, birth order, age of mother and occupation of father.
(c) Selected Demographic Factors Affecting Child Birth Weight ( by W. Tan). The paper focused on the civil registration records of hospital-born infants to ensure the data quality on birthweight. Applying multiple regression analysis, variables such as birth order, father’s occupation and legitimacy appeared to have significant association with child’s birthweight.
