Abstract
A data archiving system is a system that maintains and preserves data from statistical surveys in order to make them available for secondary use. On the other hand, a data warehouse is a managed database in which the data is subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant and nonvolatile. The data archive stores the data in the form of structured files or databases and establishes a method for convenient searching and retrieval of data. Information from a data warehouse can immediately be used for decision making. The project presents a prototype for a web-based data archiving system that will support tools for the management, increased accessibility, and preservation of an integrated collection of statistical databases. The study also discuses how independently data archives can be developed across different data producing units and can eventually evolve into a data warehouse that can support more sophisticated queries and allow analytical processing.
