Poverty is marked as a deprivation in well-being and consists of various dimensions. It includes the inability to acquire the basic goods and services necessary for survival with dignity due to low income. Similarly, it encompasses low levels of health and education, poor access to clean water and sanitation, inadequate physical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacity and opportunity to better one’s life.
Based on a review of 50 country studied by the UN on the assessment of achieving the MDG Goals, it surfaced that the resources and know-how necessary to achieve the MDGs exist. Acceleration of progress over the next five years will need to focus on continuing proven strategies, policies and interventions and making a radical break with those that do not work. There have been noticeable reductions in poverty globally. Significant improvements have been made in enrolment and gender parity in schools. Progress is evident in reducing child and maternal mortalities, increasing HIV treatments and ensuring environmental sustainability. While there are welcome developments in the global partnership, where some countries have met their commitments, others can do more.
With only five years left to achieve the MDGs by 2015, the Philippine Government, along with the government of all countries, have made poverty alleviation a top priority in their development agenda.
This training will contribute to this effort by providing basic knowledge and skills to stakeholders in the fight against poverty.
