The adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), drawn from the United Nations Millennium Declaration, was a momentous event in the history of the United Nations. It constituted an unprecedented promise by world leaders to address, as a single package, peace, security, development, human rights and fundamental freedoms (Millennium Development Goals Report 2005). The eight MDGs – ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest.
The first of the MDG goals is eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. This training will contribute to this effort by providing basic knowledge and skills to stakeholders in the fight against poverty. Lectures, discussions, and hands-on exercises on the statistical software STATA with real survey data, will enable participants to be familiar with the basic concepts and tools on the analysis of poverty and income inequality.
