Data analysis is one of the most complex processes in a statistical research. The unending classic debate: quantitative vs. qualitative research? The trend nowadays is combining the merits of the two techniques and integrating the analysis of results from the two techniques which certainly results to stronger, more meaningful and relevant interpretations of findings for any research investigation. The “quanti” part provides basis on objective calculations and assessments; the “quali” part, on the other hand provides support and additional information to strengthen the findings from the former.
As more attention is already being given on capacity building on quantitative analytical skills, this new course offering will dwell on the “quali”, particularly on two main aspects of it: 1) conduct of statistical surveys and focus group discussion (FGD) as data collection methods for qualitative data, and 2) the analysis of the qualitative data generated from them.
Survey, in general, is a method for collecting information on the different variables of interest, whether quantitative or qualitative in nature, about items in a given population using structured data collection instruments. This could be done through personal interviews, self-administered questionnaires, telephone interviews, mailed questionnaires, online surveys, etc. Surveys produce results that are easy to summarize, compare, and generalize. A focus group discussion (FGD), on the other hand, is a qualitative data gathering method which uses semi-structured discussion to obtain in-depth information on concepts, perceptions and ideas of a group. Guided by a facilitator, group members talk freely and spontaneously about a specific topic or problem being investigated.
This course will cover basic concepts on surveys and FGDs, steps on how to conduct a survey and an FGD, questionnaire construction, interview, quality control, data processing and qualitative data analysis. A software will be utilized for the different statistical tools that will be employed in the analysis.
What will participants gain?
At the end of the course, participants should be or be able to:
- Familiar in the conduct of surveys and focus group discussions (FGDs)
- Construct questionnaires for surveys and FGDs
- Analyze survey and FGD results
Who can participate?
This training course is recommended for personnel of various government and private entities who are involved in the planning and administration of surveys and FGDs. This course is also recommended for personnel engaged in socio-economic, biomedical, public health, and educational researches, studies in the behavioral and computational social sciences, where effective qualitative data analysis plays a critical role. Background in research and basic statistics is necessary and would be helpful.
